Good evening
Hoorah! Another series done! Nope, not the Beautiful Creatures series. I still have yet to finish it. Still on the 2nd book and contemplating whether I should continue or not...it's a bit boring for my taste. So here it goes.
Today I would like to review The Abandon Trilogy by Meg Cabot.
"Who is Meg Cabot?" you ask? She is the author of The Princess Diaries which was made into two Disney movies featuring Anne Hathaway who became Fantine at the new Le Mis movie. Who is Fantine?? She's the one who sang the famous "I Dreamed a Dream" song. Moving on~ The Abandon Trilogy is said to be a modern depiction of the Greek myth of Persephone.
NOW THAT SPARKED MY INTEREST.
I have always loved Greek Mythologies ever since I studied them in elementary. It's always so interesting and remarkable in its own way. I wouldn't mind sharing some of it here ;) In fact, I'd do it now. If you're not interested, scroll down straight to the book review.
Please keep in mind that the Greek mythology story here would be based on my memory as an elementary student and can be wrong at certain points.

Persephone is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, the goddess of Harvest. Persephone herself was the goddess of spring bounty, which we elementary kids would simplify it as goddess of flowers. How pretty is that?! She was described as a cheerful and beautiful goddess. So beautiful that even Hades fell in love with her. Now here comes the popular story.

Hades, being the lonely brute god of the underworld, fell in love with Persephone. AT THAT MOMENT, HE JUST DECIDED TO MAKE HER HIS WIFE. How you ask? By kidnapping her of course. How else would the lonely brute god of the underworld would be able to make someone his wife? Not by wooing or being kind to her, NOOO. He just snatched her away that's how. Here's how it happened.
One sunny day, Persephone was playing in the meadow with her nymphs, laughing and collecting flowers with that beautiful hair of hers flowing in the wind *imagine that!* and Hades, god of the underworld took his chariot, open up a crater in earth, appeared from there and just SNATCH her away to the underworld with Persephone screaming in the background. Charming isn't it?

Afterwards, Demeter, knowing that her daughter was kidnapped and forced to become the wife of Hades with the help of husband Zeus, went into a fit and destroy the whole earth. No I was joking. She didn't really done that. She simply went into despair and all living things *meaning trees, flowers, etc.* stopped to grow on Earth. It's kind of the same thing actually...so Demeter roamed the earth, searching for Persephone.
Now dear Persephone who might or might not have developed the Stockholm Syndrome, ate some pomegranates in the underworld. According to the myths, once you eat something of the underworld, you have to stay in the underworld. I DO NOT KNOW WHO THE HELL MADE THAT RULE. Now this part varies. Actually...a lot of parts of Greek mythology varies. Pomegranates can mean the real fruit or something else that has something to do with seeds. THE POINT IS, she ate it so she has to stay in the underworld. The good news is, she can go back to the surface for a certain amount of time. 6 months to be exact. So every year, Persephone spent 6 months in the underworld being the wife of Hades, and 6 months in the surface to be reunited with her mother, Demeter, and the earth bloomed with harvest once more.

Sounds familiar? It's the four seasons. Persephone stayed in the underworld when it's fall and winter, and when she's on the surface, it's springtime and summertime.
Lovely story? Not really. It's famous though. And actually adapted into popular stories. Such as the Abandon Trilogy AND the Covenant Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I'll see to the other series later.
NOW ON TO THE BOOK REVIEW! Spoiler alert!!
As I have mentioned before, this book is a modern adaptation of the myth I've just told ya. In my opinion, the book is an average story and can be boring at times, but hey, I finished it haha! I'm going to keep everything simple here though. I don't recommend reading the book if you don't have time to kill. It can be a drag sometimes.
1. Abandon
 |
there's another version of the cover but I like this one :P
not sure if it's official though |
The story starts with out main heroine, Pierce Oliviera, who apparently have died before and came back to life and is currently being chased by some boy/man. Not sure. She moved to an island named Isle Huenos or sumthin. Her parents are divorced and she is now living with her mother. The island was her mom's birthplace. Her uncle, grandma, and cousin Alex also lives there. One night there was a party for her, so that as her mom said, they all can start fresh. Apparently, Ms. Pierce had a complicated past other than being an NDE (Near death experience). So she doesn't feel comfortable at the party and went away on a bike, to a cemetery....really? Of all the places, a cemetery. There she met the boy who she kept telling everybody she have been following her around. Probably you're wondering why some guy is following her so now you shall be enlightened. Here's the flashback.
When she was 4 years old, her grandpa died. So she went to the funeral which was held at the island's cemetery. There, she found a bird who has broke its neck or wing, not sure and hold it. But the bird died and she cried. Then suddenly, a man in black apparels came and talk to her. Talk about letting little kids talk to strangers. The man then revived the bird and it flew away. Of course, being a 4 year old she ask for her grandpa to be revived too. Unfortunately the man said he can't. Now let's skip a few years forward. Pierce is now 15 years old and she died because she slipped into a pond and suffocate herself with her scarf, just bcoz she was about to save A BIRD. THE GIRL HAS SERIOUS ISSUES WITH BIRDS. Afterwards, she woke up at an unknown place (the underworld, but she didn't knew it then) where there's a lake and people in line. People who are waiting to board on a boat. Then she met a man, the guard of the place, the person in charge. She approached him because she realized, "THIS WAS THE MAN I MET WHEN I WAS 4 YEARS OLD. I SHALL SEE TO HIM AT ONCE WITHOUT THINKING" And so she did. At first, he didn't recognized her, but later he did. meh.
Pierce then continued with complaining how the service for the people in line is rude and that the place is cold *really this girl has guts* so he asked, would she like to go to a place warmer. Of course she said yes. In a blink, they teleported to a room, with a fireplace, a dining table, white curtains, and a bed. HOORAY. How creepy is that?! Then he told her the truth that she's dead and that she's going to be his "company." He even gave her a necklace. And so she panicked, no matter how handsome he is or how young he actually is, and throw that cup of tea (the one he gave her) to his face and run. Later she finds herself no longer in the underworld.
Back to the main story, she's now in the cemetery and had a fight with the guy she has been running away from for 2 years. So she's now 17 years old. The guy is 19 years old, and he has been that way for some time...as the story goes, Pierce tried to have an ordinary high school senior life but with her past haunting her. She has anger management issues. And then some being called The Furies are after her. The Furies actually possessed her grandma and John had to come and rescue her and drag her back to the underworld in order to keep her safe. See the parallel here?
The first book mainly consist of Pierce telling her story and it's very confusing in my opinion since the reader barely knows anything until the end of the book where most of the facts are finally revealed. The review I just did was basically a retelling of the base of the story and the important parts of the plot.
2. Underworld
Before continuing the story, I would like to point out that the death-deity boy who has been protecting Pierce is called John Hayden. He's the guy in charge of sorting people into the right boats to their final destination. And he has some powers with thunders. Wew~ The 2nd book starts with Pierce being blinked by John to the underworld where HE SAID she will be safe from the Furies. Then John went to his duties on the docks and Pierce stayed in his castle. All he left for her is a mourning pigeon/dove (I'm not sure), who she called "Hope." He knows this girl has something with birds. But, despite that, she still does things he didn't expect her to do. Like wandering around when she's not suppose to. She ends up meeting new people who calls John as The Captain. She also found her book bag and her phone. When she turned the phone on, she saw a video of her cousin Alex being in danger. Of course she told John about it and tried to convince John to save Alex. John, being the moody but nice guy eventually agreed. So they ventured back to the real world where John decided Pierce need to say her goodbyes to her mother because she will be staying with him FOREVER. Also thanks to the cemetery sexton who apparently knew John for some time, Pierce had the chance to see her mom. Only she left a letter and not a proper goodbye.
Then they left to find her cousin who is supposedly in danger but is actually doing fine playing World of Warcraft on his phone while at the same time being mentally unstable due to the recent facts that has been going around. Well guess what, Pierce was then attacked by a Fury and they somehow defeated it by using Pierce's necklace that can actually kill Furies. A fact that was unknown to John and his comrades for some time now. So since everyone thought it was all over and safe, they went back. Not too long after that though Alex did something foolish and is now put into an oxygen-proof coffin. Of course, when Pierce and John arrived, he's already dead. But fear not! Even though John said he couldn't revive Alex because of the consequences, somehow Alex went back to life. And Pierce's friend, Kayla, saw it all. With the sound of sirens coming from afar, they had no choice to run away so John blinked Alex and Kayla to the underworld as well...
In this book, there are a lot of drama and arguing between Pierce and John because they had some "misunderstandings" with the rules in the Underworld. In the myth, Persephone ate the pomegranates which basically means that if she ate anything of the underworld, she'll have to stay. Pierce thought it was the same thing and that she's going to have to stay forever because she had breakfast with John, but nooooooo. The pomegranate is actually a symbolism of seeds, and fertility. Oh you guessed it all right. Pierce has to stay in the underworld if she had sex with John. And they did. hah! I am not surprised at all.
3. Awaken
Here comes the final book yay!
In this book, Pierce had already gotten used to being the "queen" of the underworld and help John with his work. While Alex and Kayla are still having a bad time adapting and all. Actually scratch Kayla. Kayla likes one of John's comrades, Frank, and has been infatuated since. She is also highly adaptable. Alex is the one fuzzing around. And soooo, it was one fine day in the underworld where people are bustling in lines, waiting for their boats, until John realized that the boats are not slowing down as it approaches. Turns out, it was being driven by furies. Soooo JOHN TO THE RESCUE. He did manage to steer the boats off the docks and everyone was safe, but he died. So Pierce, being the NDE, had some mental-breaking moments.
But hey, John revived again. NOT because he's a death deity. But because Pierce met the god who's in charge of taking souls away (note: not in charge of sorting which boats they go to) named Thanatos. Thanatos possessed one of the guys in Pierce's highschool *not that she goes to highschool anymore now* so in order to kill Thanatos and get John back, Pierce had to press her necklace to that guy, I think his name is Seth Rector, without making any troubles. So she went to his party and snog his face off. By snogging I meant kissing passionately. But yeah, Thanatos was killed and John was back, punching Seth on the face because he kissed his girlfriend. Then they all live happily ever after. Well they didn't get married but they have plans and Pierce's parents' approval. It's enough ahahaha
As usual, I didn't mention some of the minor characters that helped with the story. Figured I'll spend way too much time elaborating them. I'd give the whole series 3 out of 5. Not that good but not that bad either. I wouldn't recommend it if you're not patient though haha. The first book is a chore and Pierce is not an easy character to like at first. Even John is soo moody I'm confused why Pierce likes him. But I guess, that makes him more realistic. But anyways, nothing beats a happy ending

Thanks for reading guys! This might be one of those rare moments that I actually made a long post. HAHAHA. The next book I would like to start reading is John Green's Looking for Alaska. Yes it has been released for some time but I heard it's interesting so, WHY NOT? As for Beautiful Creatures, I have finished the first book and is currently reading the 2nd one; however, I find the book not as interesting as the other books I've been reading. Not that it's a bad book. I'm just not interested. Perhaps there will come one day when I finally feel like continuing it. As for now, I'm trying to find books that are not really into paranormal fiction stuff for a change. Been reading too many of them I think. Look forward to the next post ;)
Sincerely yours,
Alicia. V
